A Pacific Bottlenose Dolphin leaps for fun
The "winter" day I took this photo in Newport Beach, California, the air temperature was a balmy 72 degrees. A large pod of Pacific Bottlenose Dolphins was cavorting near the coastline, enjoying the weather and entertaining whale watchers on three nearby boats. (Technically, dolphins ARE whales.) As my boat eventually pulled away in search of bigger whales – we spotted a gray whale nearby shortly thereafter – many dolphins followed, so I ran to the back of the vessel to shoot them jumping through the wake, a favorite pastime of these speedy mammals. This guy not only leaped but he twisted midair, showing off a little extra flair.
